Abingdon, Oxfordshire (Hybrid)

Solve the problems nobody else can.

Infinitesima is developing breakthrough semiconductor metrology technology that enables the world's leading chip manufacturers to measure devices at previously impossible levels of precision.

As our technology scales globally, we're looking for a Senior Systems Engineer who thrives on solving complex technical challenges spanning software, automation, motion control, electronics and high-precision instrumentation.

This is a role for engineers who enjoy getting to the root cause of difficult problems, understanding how complete systems interact and becoming the person others turn to when the answer isn't obvious.

If you're currently working within semiconductor equipment, robotics, scientific instrumentation, advanced manufacturing or precision engineering, this could be the challenge you've been looking for.

Why engineers join us

You'll work on technology that combines:

Nanometre-scale motion control
Precision positioning systems
Semiconductor automation
Robotics and wafer handling
Software-driven instrumentation
Advanced control systems
High-performance electromechanical assemblies

Most importantly, you'll have direct influence over how future generations of our products are designed, improved and deployed.

This isn't a role where you'll simply report problems.

You'll help solve them permanently.

What you'll be doing

Own the toughest technical challenges

Lead investigations into complex system-level issues across customer and manufacturing environments.
Diagnose problems spanning software, firmware, automation, controls, electronics and mechanical subsystems.
Drive rapid resolution of high-priority technical escalations.
Act as a senior technical authority supporting Customer Success, Applications and Engineering teams.

Become a system expert

Analyse motion control performance and closed-loop control behaviour.
Investigate sensor feedback, positioning accuracy and automation performance.
Identify failure modes across interconnected hardware and software systems.
Support optimisation of high-precision semiconductor equipment.

Shape the next generation of products

Conduct structured root cause investigations.
Identify recurring issues and long-term corrective actions.
Feed technical findings directly into Product Development and Engineering.
Influence reliability, serviceability and future product design.

Raise technical capability across the business

Develop troubleshooting tools and diagnostic procedures.
Create technical knowledge resources.
Support training and coaching activities.
Help build deeper system understanding across multiple disciplines.

We're keen to hear from engineers with experience in:

Semiconductor equipment
Semiconductor metrology
Robotics
Motion control
Automation systems
Scientific instrumentation
Microscopy
Photonics and optics
Precision engineering
Advanced manufacturing equipment
Complex electromechanical systems

What you'll bring

Essential

Experience troubleshooting complex technical systems.
Strong analytical and root cause investigation skills.
Understanding of motion control, automation or precision positioning technologies.
Ability to work across software, mechanical, electrical and systems domains.
Confidence communicating technical issues to a range of audiences.

Desirable

Semiconductor industry experience.
Semiconductor equipment or metrology systems knowledge.
Automation or robotics integration experience.
Exposure to microscopy or scientific instrumentation.
Familiarity with Python, LabVIEW or C#.

Why this opportunity is different

You'll join a growing technology company backed by leading semiconductor investors, including Applied Ventures.

You'll work alongside experts in precision engineering, semiconductor metrology, software and instrumentation while helping solve some of the industry's most challenging measurement problems.

This is a rare opportunity to move beyond component-level engineering and become a true systems expert within one of the UK's most exciting semiconductor scale-ups.

A bit about us:

Infinitesima is a privately owned company founded in 2001, as a spin-out of the University of Bristol, by CTO Professor Andrew Humphris. Our dynamic team of scientists and engineers is focussed on enabling the next generation of semiconductor devices through delivery of innovative products to customers around the world.

Our strength lies in the varied perspectives that come from different cultures, experiences, and identities. We believe that true innovation is fuelled by collaboration, locally and globally. We strive to foster an environment where everyone can contribute meaningfully and thrive. If you require adjustments to take part in the recruitment process, please let us know, we’ll do our best to support you.

Your recruitment journey:

We will interview you: Monday to Friday UK Time 9am to 4.30pm and we'll be as flexible as we can with Global Scheduling

1st stage: (45 minute) Remote meeting to evaluate your experience and technical ability

2nd stage: (2.5 hours) Face to face onsite evaluating technical, presentation and communication skills along with your ways of working and your opportunity to to know more about us

If you're not comfortable with eye contact, let us know at the start of your interview and if REMOTE, once we've said hello, feel free to turn your camera off until the end.

Informal dress is absolutely fine for onsite interviews, we want you to feel comfortable when you meet us and if there's anything else we can do to support your journey, just let us know.
